Ian McLagan - album and UK tour

Mac Ex-Small Face Ian McLagan is going back on the road in the UK and Ireland, promoting his latest album under the Bump Band name.

The album is called Never Say Never and it's released on 7th July 2008 on the Proper Records label. It's described as 'beautiful and emotionally raw' and features all new material. The tour will play at several small venues - so ideal to get things signed and a photo or two I guess.

If you want the full schedule, read on over the page.

New band: The Elements

Acid Jazz has just signed their latest hopes, Birmingham's The Elements.The_elements

Formed as long ago as 2001, only after a lengthy apprentice period has the group developed into the band you see today. The Elements are Andy Bennett (vocals, guitar), Lee Burn (vocals, guitar), Dave Caswell (vocal, bass) and Tim Jaques (drums). Frontman Andy is perhaps best known as the live guitarist with Ocean Colour Scene, appearing on their two live albums and even their last studio album. They are a self-styled 'modern beat group', although sonically they are more akin to the power-pop beloved of many mod revival scene bands, and classic guitar rock. Expect crashing chords, cavernous drums, and tight vocal harmonies, all expertly polished to give them that anthemic quality.

Already they have supported P.P. Arnold and Paul Weller, and recently signed to Acid Jazz, who shortly are to release the bands' debut single 'Caught In A Storm'. Catch them play the single launch party this Friday the 18th as part of The Beat Generation night at Smithfield's Cock Tavern, alongside London legends Smashing Time. Richard Searle (Corduroy) will be DJing on the night, which kicks off at 8pm and costs £5 entry.

Hear the band on their Myspace page here.

Specials reunion news

Over the past week news has filtered through of a potential Specials reunion.Specials

Singer Terry Hall was speaking to the BBC last week and said there could be live dates in the Autumn:

We need to spend the Summer rehearsing... I think it's taken me 30 years to realise we could do it really well…I saw Patti Smith do Horses, and I saw The Pixies reforming... you do it with dignity or don't do it at all.

Then yesterday MC and vocalist Neville Staple confirmed the rehearsal, but warned the live shows may never materialise:

A couple of months ago we all started talking. We had to talk first to see if we could get on, but we got past the talking stage. Then we said, ‘Okay, let’s see what we’re like in a room together rehearsing with instruments’. So the musicians done that first, then Terry went down. So we’ve had two rehearsals. One where they're on their own, and then the last one where me and Terry went in…So if it works, we’ll do it. If not, well. I’m sorry lads and girls. But we’re trying.

Any notion of going into the studio to record new material seem unlikely right now. Rumours of a reunion had circled for months, but it was thought keyboard player Jerry Dammers was not keen. The rehearsals have gone ahead without him, but the rest of the band haven’t given up on him eventually joining in.

Cleethorpes live acts confirmed

The biggest date in the UK soul scene calender has been for many years the 6Ts Cleethorpes Weekender, and this year's live act line-up has just been announced.6ts_logo

Taking place over the weekend of 7th-9th June at Beachcomber Holiday Centre, Cleethorpes, the 2008 6TS Northern and Modern Soul Weekender boasts three impressive acts live at the Saturday all-nighter.

Next up is Frank Dell, the New York singer with the big voice, who travels to Europe for the first time. Famous for his northern soul hit ‘He Broke Your Game Wide Open’, the long-time jazz circuit singer is soon to feature on Kent ’s “Northern Soul’s Classiest Rarities Vol 3”. Headlining Cleethorpes will be Gigi & The Charmaines, the superb girl group from Cincinnati. The group is lead by Gigi Griffin, who supplied backing vocals on James Brown’s  King sessions and went on to work in Detroit and Chicago in the mid 60s when those cities produced non-stop soul gold. An unreleased track by the group was featured on the 6Ts 23rd anniversary single. Gigi’s sister, Gerri Jackson, was responsible for the duet with Herman Lewis (Griffin) version of ‘The Right Direction’, which she will perform on the night.

First up is the Childline Rocks fundraising event which takes place at the indigO2 on Thursday March 13th. This will then be followed by a performance from new soul songstress Duffy. Also of note is the following night, where contemporary Scottish garage rockers Figure 5 will open for The Fratellis. Tickets for both these shows are on sale tomorrow (Friday) morning from 10am, so don't delay in booking.

10 questions with...

In an attempt to keep Modculture moving along with fresh content, we are starting a series of weekly interviews - and you could be one of them.

10 questions with... is exactly what it says - 10 questions with a range of people, from people on the mod scene past and present, to musicians, designers, clothing retailers, artists, DJs - in fact, just about anyone with a relevance with mod past, present or future.

Don't be shy - if you want to put yourself forward, please do so, we would love to hear from you. Or if you have a suggestion for someone we should interview, please tell us. Or finally, if you actually want to do the interview (which is as easy as compiling 10 questions in an email), again drop us a line - and the person you want to interview. Chances are we'll be able to get hold of them.

And watch out for the first interviews online later this week. More detailed interviews are to follow when the site re-design is completed.

British psych at London's ICA

Freak Interesting event at London's ICA on 21st April - Freak Out, Ethel!, which is described as "an evening of musical mayhem".

What that means in reality is three bands and a play about Syd Barrett. The play is Malcolm Boyle's one-man The Madcap -  a journey into the psychedelic underground as seen through the eyes of Syd Barrett, mixing narrative with hallucinatory film, slide projections and Boyle's own interpretations of Barrett's songs.

Along with that, there's live performances from The Amazing World of Arthur Brown, Circulus and The Pretty Things, plus psychedelic visuals from Optikinetics (as pictured).

Tickets are £20 / £18 (concessions) and  £16 ICA Members

Sharon Jones in London

Sharon_jones

Arguably the best live soul/funk act around today, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings are returning to the UK in March/April for three dates.

They're playing at the Jazz Cafe in London on Friday March 30th, Saturday March 31st and Sunday 1st April. Tickets are available now from the Mean Fiddler website.

The band are also playing other dates in Europe, check out the band's MySpace site for full details.

Weller joins cancer event line-up

Weller2_4 Paul Weller has been added to the line-up to play the latest Manchester Versus Cancer show, which takes place at Manchester's MEN Arena on 30th March 2007.

He joins a line-up that already includes Ian Brown, The Charlatans and Echo & The Bunnymen. How long each act will play isn't clear, but with a number of acts on the bill, it's unlikely that you'll get anything more than 30 minutes or so from anyone on the bill. However, it's expected that there will be some collaborations on the night - with Weller expected to play with The Charlatans.

Tickets are available for £40 each.

Mod clips on YouTube

Paul has forwarded me a link to a raft of Mod-friendly YouTube clips he has online. The content includes the likes of The Jam, Secret Affair, Nine Below Zero, The Lambrettas, The Chords and the Purple Hearts.

And best of all, he's uploaded rally footage from the 1980s. Check out the clip below for an example of view all his clips here.

John's Children in Manchester

Johnschildren Though obviously without certain famous members (Marc Bolan springs to mind), John's Children are still out gigging, the latest of which is at the Night and Day in Manchester.

The current line-up is supplemented with Morrissey's guitarist Boz Boorer and Phil King from the Jesus and Mary Chain. But you should still get all the well-known 60s tunes (Midsummer Nights Scene, Desdemona etc).

Soul Britannia at London's Barbican

Soulbritannia

Following on from the BBC/Barbican collaborations covering jazz and folk, we now have the third instalment on the series - Soul Britannia - which looks at Britain’s extended love affair with black music over the past 50 years.

Events are varied and perhaps not all to your taste, but there's definitely some interesting stuff worthy of your attention. Pick of the events for me is Transatlantic Soul Connection, which features Geno Washington, Jimmy James, Eric Burdon, Madeline Bell, Eddie Floyd and Sam Moore. The night highlights Britain's emerging fascination with black music in the 50s and 60s, revisiting the sound of the clubs in that era.

Other events include a live set from the Brand New Heavies (with a stack of special guests), a rare showing of Babylon (a 1980 movie about a young Rastafarian rapper rising above his daily grind through a reggae sound system) and Jeremy Marre’s feature on the life of James Brown - Soul Survivor. There's also DJ sets throughout from Dennis Bovell's HiFi and the Soul II Soul Sound System.

The season runs from 2nd February, with tickets available now.
