New band: Houdini Dax

by Modculture 19 April, 2011

Wales seems to be the place to look for new bands right now, in particular the See Monkey Do Monkey label. That label was responsible for The Method’s Dissidents and Dancers album and is also the place where you’ll find Houdini Dax. Continue Reading

Ace Records Catalogue – now as PDF

by Modculture 19 April, 2011

If you order regularly from Ace Records, you might well have the Ace Records Catalogue 2011. If not, you can download one for free.

Just go to the Ace Records website and you'll get all the soul, jazz, blues funk, beat, garage and more as a download. Or rather, a few downloads of PDF files, as the thing is so hefty!

Worth doing though, if only to spend the day looking at all the compilations you never got round to buying.

Baracuta G34 Mod Monkey Jacket

by Modculture 19 April, 2011

It's a shame that Baracuta sticks its new logo onto the lower-end items of its range, but not on most of the higher-end products. It doesn't exactly do the lower-to-mid priced items any favours. Like this Baracuta G34 Mod Monkey Jacket.

It's a like or hate jacket anyway, a mix of monkey / bomber jacket and the Harrington, with those pockets screaming the latter, but the contrast elasticated waist, collar and cuffs leaning more towards the former. There's also some branded buttons, a slim fit and a lightweight cotton construction, so good for the summer.

Not yet on the official Baracuta site, but if you like it, the jacket is selling at the Stuart's of London site for £135.

Ralph Lauren madras short-sleeved shirts

by Modculture 19 April, 2011

Liking the look of these Ralph Lauren madras short-sleeved shirts for the summer months.

One is pictured above, another over the page, with the shirts in a 'custom fit' (aka slim), with a curved hem, button-down collar, those short sleeves and of course, made of 100 per cent cotton. The logo might be a problem for some – it's there on both.

Prices start at £75.

Brighton Rock DVD release

by Modculture 15 April, 2011

It didn't exactly get a glowing review off us at the start of the year, but some people did like the mid-friendly remake of Brighton Rock. If you are one of them, you might want the DVD.

The DVD, as well as the Blu-ray, have now both been confirmed for a 20th June release in the UK. Both are already available for pre-order at Amazon, both already being heavily discounted – the DVD is up for £11.93, the Blu-ray at £12.99.

I've just checked with the company and as yet, there are no confirmed extras for either disc. There are certain to be some – I wouldn't be surprised if there was some kind of 'making of…' and you are almost guanranteed to get a trailer. When we hear for sure (and if it's interesting), we'll let you know.

Connett's new album reviewed

by Modculture 15 April, 2011

What's that? Two albums reviewed in two days? Yes, things are looking up on the productivity front (getting in some practice for the new site). Anyway, following on from the Etta James album yesterday is something from another corner of the musical spectrum.

That being Love and Curses, the new album by Connett, which has just been released on the 208 Records label. The band have been doing the rounds on the 'mod' circuit for some time and this is their second album.

Worth picking up? Read the review for my personal opinion of that.
