The Flipside with Ray Davies

It's not had any publicity so far (compared to the main Meltdown event), but we've just heard that Ray Davies is actually doing his own Flipside event with the BFI, chatting onstage and showing some films.

The first of those events is The Meltdown Observer Talk: Ray Davies & Julien Temple in Conversation. Is it what it says, with Davies on stage with filmmaker Julien Temple to discuss Davies' relationship with cinema, and the films that have inspired him throughout his career. Saturday 18th June at 4pm for that, with tickets at £13, discounts for concessions and members.

Limited edition Lambretta helmets

Apparently, this is the official limited edition Lambretta helmet range, offered by Heritage Helmets and produced in Italy with Project SRI.

All are 'eco' leather-lined, open-faced helmets, with four designs specifically designed to compliment classic Lambrettas. The 'Bianco' and 'Nero' models both feature the number '47' within a target design (on white and black backgrounds respectively) to commemorate the first year of the Lambretta scooter's manufacture. The 'Union' uses the Union Jack (as you might have guessed), while the 'Britalia' mixes the Union Jack and Italian Tricolore flags.

Each helmet also comes with a 30-month manufacturer’s warranty and all of the designs meet European Road Safety Standards. £150 secures you one. More images over the page.

New band: The Shook-Ups

Nice to discover an interesting new band by accident, as I just did with The Shook-Ups (with a little help of a gig I was sent to plug!)

The band are out of the Liverpool / Wigan area and are made up of ex-members of local bands Moco, The V.C.s, The Stags, Filthy Romance and Doktor Combover. The V.C.s are a band I saw live some time back and were superb. The new band could be just as good. They specialise in noisy (but tuneful) 60s-style garage. If that sounds like your thing, check out the Soundcloud page for a set of tunes, including a nice take on The Magic Touch.

Or see MySpace for upcoming gigs. One of those is flyer'd above, The Go-Go! 11th Birthday Bash on Saturday 7th May. It's Downstairs @ Studio 24, Calton Road, Edinburgh, with Tall Paul & Big Gus! playing garage, soul, mod, freakbeat and girl group sounds. Admission is £7/5, £3 before 11pm and the band is on at Midnight.

Day of the Peacock book reviewed

Remember we mentioned The Day of the Peacock: Style for Men 1963-1973 by Geoffrey Aquilina Ross a few weeks back? Well, now we have a review of the book online.

The Scenester has donw the honours, reviewing a book by the former men's editor for Vogue in the 1960s, recalling the era’s most dashing figures, including Tommy Nutter, Mick Jagger and Patrick Lichfield, as well as iconic shops and tailors such as Granny takes a Trip, Blades, Hung on You and Mr Fish.
