J. Simons to return online

by Modculture 26 July, 2010

The store closed down at the start of 2010 and we wondered if the name J. Simons would continue. It seems that is the case.

Gone is the Russell Street store, but according to a new website, 'the new shop will be opening soon'. Not only that, the legendary mod-friendly retailer will be be opening an online store for its ivy-inspired clobber, the first time J. Simons has sold online.

No more detail as yet – but there is a website, which you can sign up to for updates.

The Who at Filmore posters

by Modculture 23 July, 2010

The Wolfgang's Vault site has some interesting music content, but it also has some interesting art too – like The Who at Filmore posters.

Two separate gigs, the one to the left is the Tommy tour, designed by David Byrd and re-printed on glossy stock and printed in a run of 500. The Helen Hersh-designed poster to the right is a gig from a year earlier, with support from Buddy Guy and a 3rd re-print in a 1000-run.

Prices start at $24 and the company seems to ship worldwide.

eBay watch: Generation X book

by Modculture 22 July, 2010

Bit of a bargain on eBay – the Generation X book by Charles Hamblett and Jane Deverson.

We featured it in our five must-buy books feature some time back and as we mentioned then, Deverson was commissioned by Woman's Own to find out the thoughts of the youth of 1963/64. As the views of the kids (many of them mods – it was the scene's peak) were a bit too racy for the magazine, they were compiled in a book with the aid of Charles Hamblett.

Long out of print, this copy seems in reasonable condition and well priced at £7.75 on a 'Buy It Now'. if it gets snapped up quickly, Abebooks often has copies floating around too.

Sorry, a little slow on drawing this. The winner of the VIP tickets for the Paul Weller Isle of Wight gig is:

Jonathan Hadley – Worcester (UK)

Well done to him and if you didn't win, make sure you enter the Aertex competition – not long to go on that one. Winner of the Griffin x Baracuta Harrington incoming soon too.

Cult Clip: The Creation – I'm A Man

by Modculture 22 July, 2010

Love this German TV clip of The Creation doing I'm A Man.

Yes, the song perhaps better known by Bo Diddley, but this time played with a beat/garage swagger by the underrated combo. Many of you will know the band inside out, but for those who don't, there's a 23-track best of CD available for under a fiver. Well worth owning.

Northern Soul Classics CD review

by Modculture 20 July, 2010

Not content with producing the Original Mod Classics CD, the same label has also brought out Northern Soul: 20 Original Classics. And like the last one, we've gone and reviewed it.

Same formula, similar price – even got the same bloke doing the sleevenotes (Paolo Hewitt). Different tracklisting obviously. Anyway, check out the review, it's online now.

If you're around the Merseyside area, you might want to stick your head into the Modrophonic event in Liverpool.
