How to buy 60s garage

by Modculture 22 June, 2010

Ace Records has done another of its online guides to buying music, this time with a how to buy 60s garage rundown.

Alec Palao is the guide, introducing the genre and breaking down his recommendations into geographical areas.

Obviousl all those recommendations will be from the Ace back catalogue, but as they have so many gems in there, that would perhaps have been likely whether it was written for Ace or not. Anyway, check it out at the website

eBay watch: Philips 133 record player

by Modculture 21 June, 2010

Looking for a new record player? You could do worse than check out unused 1970s Philips 133 portable record player, which is up for grabs on eBay.

Dating back to the 1970s, it is indeed described as 'mint condition' and 'real museum quality', so we can presume this is a pretty decent model being offered. Features include battery or mains power, a 70s orange colour scheme, 33/45/78 speeds and a speaker that doubles as a case, complete with integrated handle.

All of that right now for just £1 plus postage costs.

PorTables – vinyl-inspired tableware

by Modculture 21 June, 2010

You may know Kavel Rafferty for her club flyers or if you were around, the sleeves of the free CDs we gave away for the Modculture Outta Sight club night amongst many other higher profile things. Well, she has now teamed up with Ella Doran to make PorTables

The new collection of tableware combines Rafferty's love of vinyl with Doran's distinctive product designs. It's all based around images of a collection of vintage portable record players which have been printed onto table mats and coasters. Vintage music lovers will now be able to eat to a slightly different beat.

A set of six table mats cost £39 while six coasters will set you back £21.

Vespa PK50 scooter x Panini stickers

by Modculture 21 June, 2010

Take one old scooter, saved from the scrapyard and a pile of old footballs stickers and you get what's being called the Copa Scooter.

Copa because it's the work of the Copa Football store in Amsterdam, which has dug out an old (1985) PK50 and conjured up 1,000 Panini stickers from between 1970 and 1990 to create a World Cup-themed scoot.

You can see the scooter around Amsterdam or at the Cop Football flagship store in Amsterdam. Want to own it? There's no word on buying, but if you drop them a line, they take an offer. More shots over the page.

Mod Crop The Musical returns

by Modculture 17 June, 2010

It was running last year and now Mod Crop The Musical is returning for another run in Nottingham.

Written by Steve Wallis and Quadrophenia novelist Alan Fletcher, the story is set in 1965 and based on Brummel's Last Riff, the latter writers' first novel in his Mod Crop Trilogy.

It's going out again this July at The Lace Market Theatre, Nottingham, with the same director but with a smaller cast than featured at the Theatre Royal premiere last June due to stage size limitations. Tuesday 27th – 31st July are the dates, more information on the website.

The Corridor People hits DVD

by Modculture 17 June, 2010

I'll be honest, I've never heard of it before, but the information sent across describes The Corridor People as a 'surreal crime/fantasy adventure series in the mould of the The Avengers'.

Dating back to 1966, just four episodes were actually broadcast of the series, which starred John Sharp and Elizabeth Shepherd (the actress originally cast as Emma Peel), offering up 'strikingly original photography', 'heavily stylised sets' and an end product like 'a lost Harold Pinter play with an added dash of Monty Python'.

What's it about? Well: 'A host of unlikely characters include Kronk, a paternal CID agent, his henchmen Inspector Blood and Sergeant Hound, and American, Bogart-worshipping private eye Phil Scrotty; each episode sees them pitched against the avaricious schemes of Syrie Van Epp, a beautiful, treacherous Persian millionairess.' So there you go. It's out in July for £10.99.
