Club focus: Hidden Charms (London)

by Modculture 26 April, 2010

Not just a club, Hidden Charms is more of a monthly R&B event.

Taking in R&B in a wider, more original sense (as far back as the late 40s, through to the early 60s), the club mixes DJs with live R&B house bands and some 'exotic' dancing at the Cock Tavern in the Smithfield Market end of London.

Check out the feature now, with the next date being Saturday May 15th 2010.

Ska with Laurel in Leicester

by Modculture 26 April, 2010

Thanks to Alan Buchanan for flagging up Ska with Laurel – although you might need to pop it into your diary for future reference.

According to the website of the local authority, Ska with Laurel takes place from 2nd October 2010 – 8th May 2011 at the New Walk Museum & Art Gallery and: 'tells the story of the 'Godfather of Ska', Laurel Aitken. Widely acknowledged as the originator of ska music, Laurel Aitken was a hugely influential figure in reggae and a key figure in bringing these musical genres to popularity in England. He lived in the heart of Leicester for 35 years and made a huge contribution to the cultural life of the city.'

No more details as yet, but should be worth checking out if you're in the area. More as we get it.

Modernist t-shirts website

by Modculture 26 April, 2010

Just been sent the link to Modernist t-shirts, so thought it a good idea to pass said website on.

Based in Australia, it sells (as you might have guessed) t-shirts, some of which have a mod-friendly twist. Like the one above for example, which is a one-colour screenprint 'inspired by the 1960s album Ready Steady Go!' (their words, not mine – sure I've seen the image somewhere else, but the brain cells can't quite place it right now).

Anyway, check out that and the others online. The above sells for $45 (Australian) and shipping is worldwide.
