Classic 1960s Gonks remade

by Modculture 26 November, 2009

There were plenty of variations of the Gonk in the 1960s, but the Beas Beastliies Gonk is something very special, it's based on the Gonks from the cult classic Gonks Go Beat movie.

They're also being offered in very limited numbers, each one handmade in London using vintage fabrics (which makes them unique) and only available from What the Butler Wore 131 Lower Marsh, Waterloo, London – so you'll need to pencil in some time to get down there if  you want one of these beauties in time for the festive season.

The one thing we don't know is the price, you'll need to drop WTBW a line or give them a call to find that out (and to reserve one if you're planning on travelling any distance).  See another image over the page.

Retro TV W/C 27th November 2009

by Modculture 26 November, 2009

Barry Murphy returns once more to trawl the TV and radio guides (so you don't have to), finding anything worth tuning into this week. All listings are for UK terrestrial TV, Freeview and national radio, with the shows running from Friday 27th November to Thursday 3rd December 2009.

Highlights of the week

BBC 4 this week pays tribute to the original Man in Black, Johnny Cash with a night of programming devoted to this American legend. The documentary Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison (Friday 27th, 9pm. Repeated Sunday 29th, 12.20am ) explores, arguably, the most important day in his career. Cash's concert at Folsom State Prison in California in January 1968 touched a raw nerve in the American psyche and made him a national hero at a troubled time in American history. Using the stark images of rock photographer Jim Marshall, graphic techniques, archive footage and interviews with Merle Haggard, Cash's daughter Rosanne, band members Marshall Grant and WS 'Fluke' Holland, alongside former inmates of the prison, the film documents this explosive concert, the live album that followed and a transformative moment in the lives of Cash, the inmates of Folsom Prison and the American nation in the troubled year of 1968.

Paul Weller Royal Albert Hall gigs

by Modculture 25 November, 2009

Paul Weller has announced two gigs at London's Royal Albert Hall, taking place on May 24th and 25th 2010.

The gigs will be the first time Weller has played the venue since 2004. Tickets for the gigs go on sale next Monday (November 30th). The gigs are no doubt to promote his new material, which is being led by the single 7&3 Is The Strikers Name (pictured above), which you can download now or pick up on limited edition 7-inch vinyl. The vinyl is imited to 1,000 copies, with the vinyl screen printed so that only every 20 copies will have the same artwork.

As an added bonus, everyone who buys a 7-inch or download will also be entered into a draw to win a meet & greet with Paul at one of the Royal Albert Hall shows for you and a friend.

Fred Perry for Kids range

by Modculture 24 November, 2009

Back in 2006 on the Retro To Go website, we featured something called My First Fred Perry, basically a classic Fred Perry polo shirt for one-year-olds. It didn't last long and we're constantly getting emails chasing them up. Well, that's not come back, but there is now a Fred Perry for Kids range.

It's essentially the same idea – a classic and authentic Fred Perry shirt for little people, a shrunk down version of the ones you might buy yourself, every detail the same and available in six different colours.

If you want one, the Fred Perry site stocks them or you can bag one at ASOS, price at both is £35.

Shag's Lady Z limited edition print

by Modculture 24 November, 2009

On sale this week, the latest print from Shag (aka Josh Agle) is called Lady Z and it's limited to just 250.

This 12-colour serigraph is sized at 24.5 x 17 inches and is essentially classic Shag – a 1960s scene of decadence as a hip young woman is looked after by three old school bodybuilder types. Signed by the artist, it sells for $200 while stocks last.

Also available in extremely limited numbers is Four Hands, the drawings of Shag – a catalogue of drawings produced by Shag for his 2007 show in Spain. If you want that, it sells for $39.95 and you can pick it up right here. If you've not encountered Shag before, there's an extensive interview we did with him online – you'll find that here.

Wearetuktuk floral shirts

by Modculture 24 November, 2009

If you like the idea of a floral shirt, Wearetuktuk (formerly Tuk Tuk) has a couple of new styles new on its online store.

Both the Pop Floral and Libertine Floral shirts are slim-fitting, with the Pop Floral made of a vintage 100 per cent fabric (so limited in numbers), complete with a 2.5-inch collar and no pocket (although those details can be altered at checkout). By contrast, the Libertine has a button-down collar, but is essentially the same look.

Get them while you can, they retail for £55 each.

Pete McKee x Clarks desert boots

by Modculture 23 November, 2009

We know absolutely nothing about these, except that the Pete McKee x Clarks desert boots do actually exist.

Yes, a classic desert boot featuring the mod-styled doodlings of Pete McKee, who you may recall from his mod-themed Oasis artwork we featured some time back. Check out his website, there's some great imagery available to buy.

Will they actually hit the shops? Will they come to the UK? Will you actually wear them? How much will they cost? No-one knows right now, but they could be useful as a quirky piece of interior design.

Aertex Fabian polo shirt

by Modculture 23 November, 2009

Very much liking the look of the Aertex Fabian polo shirt, which is new to the Manchester-based company's range as part of an extended knitwear offering.

Very much a classic, 60s-style piece of knitwear, it's actually a wool and acrylic mix (50/50), with three buttons, a jaquard pattern on the chest and a small Aertex logo.

Available online, it sells for £70.
