Revo Heritage 1960s-style radio

by Modculture 27 October, 2009

Want the 60s looks but also the modern-day functionality? You want the Revo Heritage radio and iPod dock, which is available to buy in a matter of days.

Pitched as a 'contemporary reinterpretation of classic European table radio designs from the 50s and 60s' (think Braun, Bang & Olufsen etc), it's a mix of metal and walnut veneer that's designed to look like a high-end radio of days gone by, but with DAB, DAB+, FM and Wi-Fi internet radio inside, this is very much cutting edge technology. Oh yes, room for your iPod and iPhone too.

You'll also get a custom designed 3-inch neodymium speaker driver and high fidelity 7W amplifier, a graphical OLED display, 'joystick' control system and a 30-day Last.fm trial subscription. Look out for it in early November at John Lewis, priced at £229.95.

Quadrophenia documentary reviewed

by Modculture 27 October, 2009

A few days back, I was sent a DVD called The Who, The Mods and the Quadrophenia Connection and today, it's just been reviewed.

A non-authorised (by the band anyway) DVD, it tells the story of the Who's journey into mod, their path out of it and their rediscovery of it via the Quadrophenia concept album and movie. It also features archive clips, clips of the 60s era, other associated bands and plenty of opinion from the likes of Richard Barnes, Terry Rawlings, Eddie Piller, Paolo Hewitt and Dave Edwards, to name just five.

Check out the review and if you fancy it, the DVD is available to buy now.

John Lewis buckle neck pea coat

by Modculture 27 October, 2009

When the temperatures drop, you can't beat something like a pea coat to be warm and smart – and this John Lewis buckle neck pea coat is as good as any.

Not the cheapest on the market, but far from the most expensive, the coat has a couple of unique twists, namely buckle detailing on the cuffs and collar and a distinctive grey finish to the wool fabric.

Aside from that, it's a classic pea coat with double breasted front and all the warmth you'll need when winter comes. Yours for £120.

60s-style Tweed Skirt Suit by Brora

by Modculture 27 October, 2009

There was once a time when suits were a dedicatedly stylish wardrobe item, rather than a work-related necessity for most of us. Arguably the peak of ladies suit styling was the 1960s, and this Brora Checked Tweed Suit captures some of that chic.

The classic tweed fabric is in muted tones, making this one for daytime wear, but it isn't dull as a result. The skirt is a classic pencil shape, while the cropped jacket provides the 60s chic. The short A-line cut of the jacket, combined with no lapels and a high crew-neck style collar cut give a retro silhouette that remains undated.

Get this from Brora online in separates, the skirt costs £95 with the jacket at £195.

by Modculture 25 October, 2009

Funny – some years there's nothing to do in Manchester on New Year's Eve, but this year two clubs take place within 10 minutes walk of each other – the previously-mentioned Hideaway New Year's Eve event and now the No Way Out NYE party.

The night is a No Way Out v Pow Wow night, with DJs Mik Parry, Callum, Johnny Cockerline and Phil Saxe. It takes place (as you can imagine) on 31st December 2009 at Barca in Castlefield, £10 gets you in.

Full details in events section. Maybe the two events can run some sort of pass out scheme so you can try each one?

Christys & Co pork pie hats

by Modculture 25 October, 2009

According to our information, Christys & Co were responsible for bringing the pork pie hat to the British high street, producing the hat for Dunn & Co in the early 60s. Now it's back – but in strictly limited numbers.

The limited edition reissue goes by the name of the Maddern pork pie (named after Keith Maddern, who is responsible for this limited run), but is made and sold by Christys & Co, the hat made to order by the company and sold in their box. Each hat takes 3 to 4 weeks to make and is sold with a certificate of authenticity containing the number of the hat along with a 'care of your hat' brochure.
