Rhino's Where the Action Is! boxset

If you've got the Nuggets box and are on the look out for something cut from the same cloth (albeit slightly more commercial), you might want to check out Rhino's newly-released Where the Action Is! boxset.

It digs up 101 'nuggets' from  Los Angeles' music scene from 1965 - 68, including gems from The Byrds,  Buffalo Springfield, Captain Beefheart, The Mama & The Papas, The Beach Boys and Love, cult classics from The Standells, Spirit, The Seeds, The Bobby Fuller Four and The Electric Prunes, along with obscure tracks and unreleased tunes every bit as tasty over four CDs, compiled 'thematically' to cover different aspects of the pop, rock, club and Top 40 sounds of the era.
 
It's packaged in a coffee table book resembling the Nuggets collection from 2006, with information about Los Angeles' music scene, including a comprehensive timeline, a listing of the clubs and who performed there, an essay about the L.A. radio stations that defined the era, plus a track-by-track commentary. Ember Jazz: The Flamingo Connection

We don't feature much jazz on these pages, but Ember Jazz: The Flamingo Connection is worth a mention.

Essentially it's an overview of the late 50s, early 60s club jazz sound of the Flamingo, with tracks pulled from the archives of Jeffrey Kruger's Ember label. An impressive 36 tracks over the two CDs, with acts including Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, Annie Ross, Tony Kinsey, Bill LeSage, Carmen McRae, Don Rendell and Tony Crombie.

Pretty cheap too at £8.79.

Joining forum with webmail addresses

Club Cinematheque in Leicester

If you happen to be in the Leicester area on Saturday 24th October, you miht want to check out Club Cinematheque.

For your £3 admission fee, you get live mod soul from DC Fontana, acid jazz from Hopscotch Boulevard and three DJs playing vintage tunes including Hammond, Italian Soundtracks, Library music, Garage and Psych, along with Siegfried Finkelstein's View-Master Club (presenting 'Minnesota State Parks'), and Super 8 projections.

It runs from 8pm until midnight, venue is The Regent Social Club, 102 Regent Rd, Leicester, LE1 7DA.
