Latest BFI / Flipside DVD releases

by Modculture 26 July, 2009

We're big fans of both the BFI and the Flipside crew, so we're always looking forward to both the big screen presentations and the DVD/Blu-ray releases – and three new titles have just been announced for retail.

Yes, coming to both DVD and Blu-ray on 24th August 2009 are three more wonderfully obscure and overlooked British films come to DVD and Blu-ray – Herostratus, All the Right Noises and Man of Violence, all packed with extras and of course, featuring in-depth booklets offering backgrounds to the movies.

Rather than list all the details here, we've gone into in-depth detail about each release over at our Cinedelica site – just follow the link to find out about plots, disc details and all those lovely extras for each movie.

The Moons new 45 on Acid Jazz

by Modculture 23 July, 2009

According to the blurb, the audio on the video below is the 'demo' of The Moons' new 45, Torn Between Two, which is out on Acid Jazz in September, but this 60s-inspired groove still sounds pretty good to us.

Remember The Branded? We featured the rough 'n' ready Swedish garage band back at the start of 2008 – we loved them back then and we still love them now. In fact, they're back in the UK for a mini tour, so if you want to catch them doing what they do best (playing live and loud), now's your chance.

The dates actually start tonight, the full list is:
23rd July: Priors Inn, Bury St Edmunds
24th July: Dirty Water Club, London
25th July: Go Go Cage, The Magnet, Liverpool
26th July: Tiger Lounge, Manchester

If you want to check them out in advance, check out the MySpace site.

Ion iPTUSB portable turntable

by Modculture 23 July, 2009

The portable 'suitcase' record player has grown up, with the Ion iPTUSB portable vinyl-archiving turntable offering both the looks and the option to convert your vinyl to MP3 easily.

It's an update, but still packs in the retro looks and of course, is primed for your old school vinyl. But it's also a modern piece of kit, powered by mains or battery, you can take the turntable anywhere, using the USB connector to hook up to a PC or Mac to transfer that vinyl to MP3 and/or your digital player. Or simply use it to play your vinyl, either through larger speakers or via the small built-in speaker.

See over the page for the turntable in 'suitcase' mode and if you like what you see, the Ion iPTUSB is available at Urban Outfitters for £90, complete with cartridge and stylus, 45RPM adapter, cables, slipmat and software for converting your files.

The Sharper Word reissue update

by Modculture 23 July, 2009

Earlier in the week, we mentioned that Paolo Hewitt's The Sharper Word has been reissued and as it was on our top five book list, you really should own a copy. What we didn't know was how 'revised' the new version was – but thanks to Mr Hewitt, we now do.

The latest version of The Sharper Word contains all the original articles, along with four new pieces from Dave Godin, Keith Rylatt and Phil Scott, Graham Lentz and Alex Roest, the latter being an edited version of an article Alex wrote about suedeheads – you can find the full version here.

Paolo Hewitt will be giving a reading from the book at the Secret Garden Party in Cambridge this Sunday at three o'clock if you happen to be in the area.
