Liam Gallagher's Quadrophenia shoot

by Modculture 21 May, 2009

According to Liam Gallagher, his Pretty Green label is going to features the likes of desert boots, nice knitwear, quality clobber and 'none of that skinny stuff', which doesn't sound a million miles away from what we feature on here.

So it's no surprise to see the advertising campaign borrowing a bit from the world of mod too, specifically Quadrophenia if these images are anything to go by. They appeared on the Pretty Green site ahead of the label's full launch in June.

We're looking forward to it, especially if classic gear is the name of the game. See more images from the photoshoot over the page or check out the label's website via the link below.

Just 100 will be sold, for how much we don't know, but we suspect they'll come in at a premium. If you want to get your name down, drop Fred Perry a line here. See over the page for more images.

Retro TV W/C 22nd May 2009

by Modculture 21 May, 2009

Barry Murphy returns once more trawl the TV and radio guides (so you don't have to) to find anything worth tuning into this week. All listings are for UK terrestrial TV, Freeview and national radio, with the shows running from Friday 22nd May to Thursday 28th May 2009.

Highlight of the week

April 5th 1968, the morning after one of the most catastrophic moments in American history – the assassination of Martin Luther King. America's inner cities had begun to implode and in Boston there is a fragile peace. The mayor of Boston is about to cancel a long-scheduled James Brown concert to avoid confrontation – a potentially incendiary move – but after warnings he has a change of heart and asks if there is 'something James Brown can do to help', by accident realising that by televising the concert they could keep people indoors that night and prevent widespread rioting.

The Night James Brown Saved Boston (BBC 4. Friday 22nd, 9.15pm. Repeated 1.15am & Saturday 23rd, 12.45am) tells the story of that amazing night and features rarely-seen footage of the Godfather of Soul's concert plus the personal recollections of James Browns band members, friends like activist Reverend Al Sharpton, personal manager Charles Bobbitt, Princeton University Professor Dr. Cornel West, Boston citizens, those who attended the concert, politicians (such as former Boston Mayor Kevin White) and Newsweek's David Gates. The Night James Brown Saved Boston tells the compelling story of an artist at the absolute peak of his powers using his artistry for the greater good.

London in the Raw (1964) reviewed

by Modculture 20 May, 2009

After weeks of banging on about the forthcoming Flipside DVD and Blu-ray releases, we've finally got our hands on them – and the first of the releases has now been reviewed.

London in the Raw is a sensationalist 1964 flick, looking at life in the heart of the city, night clubs, strip clubs, beatniks, meths drinkers – you get the idea. Plenty of add-ons too, with shorts from the era and a hefty booklet full of essays and background information.

Want to know more? Check out the review, it's online now at Cinedelica, you can see it via the link below.

Daisies (Sedmikrásky) heads to DVD

by Modculture 17 May, 2009

Looking for some cult Czech new wave cinema from the 1960s? You're in luck as the cult classic Daisies (Sedmikrásky) is being reissued by Second Run on 1st June 2009.

A bizarre movie, directed by director Vera Chytilova, it follows two young women (both called Marie) who decide to carry out 'pranks' and acts of rebellion against the oppressive world around them. There's not much plot, but this is a hugely influential film that's also a genuine treat for your eyes. And perfect for a psychedelic backdrop…!

A clip below and if you like it, you can order one from Amazon right now ahead of that June release date for a heavily discounted price. Hoping to get a review online in the not-too-distant future.

BGP's Terry Callier Story (1964 – 80)

by Modculture 17 May, 2009

This one seems to have passed us by, but recently-released by Ace/BGP is About Time – The Terry Callier Story (1965 – 82).

It looks to be pretty much the essential starting point for the folk/soul great, pulling together the best moments of Callier's career, taking from the Prestige, Cadet and Elektra labels. That includes the collectable You’re Going To Miss Your Candyman (a £400 northern rarity), a first-time CD release for Terry's final single and an unreleased folk/funk track from the Cadet archives.

Oh yes – and Ordinary Joe is there (of course). 16 tracks on a single CD, yours for just under £12.

The Enemy's 'mod' video

by Modculture 14 May, 2009

A few weeks back, we put out a request for people to feature in the new video by The Enemy and if you wondered how it turned out, well here it is.

It's actually a pretty decent watch, even if the song itself (Sing When You're In Love) isn't all that much. See what you think below…
