Terry Hall at the 100 Club reviewed

by Modculture 27 June, 2008

Terry Hall this week played an invite-only gig (courtesy of Fred Perry Subculture) at London’s 100 Club under the name Terry Hall and Friends – and Electric Roulette was there to review it.

Not the Specials reunion that a few expected, but there were a number of Specials songs aired, as well as other tracks from Terry’s career and a few choice covers.

Check out the review via the link below and look out for a couple of videos from the night online over the weekend.

Invasion scooter rally in Yorkshire

by Modculture 25 June, 2008

Just around the corner is the Yorkshire Scooter Alliance (YSA) annual weekend get-together, Invasion.

Now into its 5th year, the Invasion sees scooterists from all over Yorkshire and beyond gather between the 11th and 13th of July. Expect the normal rally affair – custom show, dealers, soul & ska DJs – plus live music from The Finnlys, Barmy Surplus, RT3 (formerly The Purple Hearts) and The Vesparados. Plus there is a chance to win a restored scooter, a GP200 Streetracer. Admisson each day is just £6 to YSA memebrs, and £12 to non-members. The venue for the weekend is the Northern Events Arena in Pickering, which has all the on-site facilities you could hope for.

For more on the event, and on what The YSA does, visit their website here.

New band: Eli Paperboy Reed

by Modculture 25 June, 2008

Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed and The True Loves are a band out of time in 2008, but very much in tune with the sounds Modculture readers appreciate.

24-year-old Reed, from Allston, Massachusetts, has forged a sound based on the early 60s R&B, with Stax-style horn embellishments. From the soulful balladry of ‘Am I Just Fooling myself’, the funky ‘The Satisfier’, through to the hip-shakin’ ‘Doing The Boom Boom’, his voice is always at the fore, and (if you’ll excuse the pun) he always delivers. If you want authenticity then you’ve come to the right place, as Reed sings like his life depends upon it. His debut album Roll With You has just been released, to ecstatic reviews. Reed and his band are over for a few dates in Europe this summer. You can catch them at:

Paris La Maroquinerie (July 15th)
Amsterdam Paradiso (16th)
Belgium Dour Festival (17th)
Suffolk Latitude Festival (19th)
London Lovebox Weekender (20th)
London Arts Theatre (21st, Mojo Club with James Hunter)
London 229 (23rd)
London Proud Galleries (24th)
Glasgow King Tut’s (25th)
Gateshead Summetyne Festival (26th)

Hear Reed on his Myspace page here. You can buy the album Roll With You from Amazon here.

500 Lost Gems Of The Sixties book

by Modculture 23 June, 2008

Here is the sort of book record collectors and music obsessives love to hate, but purchase regardless – a compendium of 500 Lost Gems Of The Sixties.

Well-known music author Kingsley Abbott has gathered together his favourite singles of the decade, all of which never made the UK Top 10. Featuring true stories, facts and general assorted trivia, it is definitely a book to dip into now and again, and help you weave together your knowledge of artists, labels and producers from the time. Artists featured include Fairport Convention, The Four Tops, Dick Dale, Martha & The Vandellas, Brain Wilson,  The Chantelles, We Five, The Shangri-Las, Edwin Starr, The Righteous Brothers, Bobby Moore, The Rhythm Aces, and many more.

500 Lost Gems Of The Sixties is published by Ovolo and is available to buy for £11.67 from Amazon here. A limited (500 copies) hardback edition is also available. The book has its own promotional Myspace page, which can be found here. And if you live in London get along to Filthy MacNastys on the 8th of July for the book ‘launch’ (starts at 8pm, and is free entry).

Cult Clip: The Standells

by Modculture 21 June, 2008

Believe me, Riot On Sunset Strip isn’t a great film – but it does have its great moments. And one of them is the theme tune by The Standells.

I don’t think you can buy this tale of teen rebellion on DVD right now (certainly not in the UK), but you can enjoy that Standells clip right now by clicking below. Or you can find more on the movie at Cinedelica here.
