Big Breadwinner Hog – 'Mod' gangster

by Modculture 15 February, 2007

Big Breadwinner Hog was before my time, but I do know of the controversy surrounding this violent crime drama in the sixties. And if you want to see what the fuss was about, you can find out from 19th March 2007 when Big Breadwinner Hog is released on DVD for the first time.

On its original transmission, Big Breadwinner Hog shocked some of the ITV companies so much that it was either moved to a late night slot or pulled from the schedules completely. Peter Egan played Hogarth (aka Hog) – ruthlessly ambitious, flash, violent and hated by old-school gang boss Lennox (Timothy West) for his "long hair, mod attitude and uncanny ability to upset the status quo".

Written and produced by award-winning writer Robin Chapman and directed by BAFTA-winners Mike Newell and Michael Apted, it’s said to be one of the finest British gangster dramas.

Also on the five-disc set is another lost sixties gangster show – Spindoe – which follows Alex Spindoe – ex-crime czar of the South London criminal gangs, out of prison and in the firing line from his old gang members, the North London gangs and the police.

Both shows come with a vareity of extra too – we’ll have a review of the set online before the release date.

Onitsuka Tiger Nippon 60 trainers

by Modculture 9 February, 2007

Definitely my favourite trainers of the moment are these Onitsuka Tiger Nippon 60 trainers, which, as the name suggests, date back to 1960.

Reissued  by the company for 2007, they were designed for the Japanese delegation at the Olympics in Rome for that year. They feature a contrasting white stripe on the side and front, coupled with the "sun" logo on the side.

Lightweight, available in a number of colours, they’re certainly worth a close look if you fancy something like a bowling shoe. They retail for £75.

A Spectacle of Fashion in Film

by Modculture 6 February, 2007

Film meets fashion at the Everyman Cinema Club in London on Sunday 11th February, with a screening of the classic Ipcress File and the re-launch of a range of vintage glasses from Oliver Goldsmith under the name A Spectacle of Fashion in Film.

The link? Well, Caine wore Oliver Goldsmith frames for his role as Harry Palmer in the movie. The label was re-launched in 2005 by the founder’s great grand-daughter Claire Goldsmith, with 10 vintage designs from the OG archive being unveiled at this event – and there’s a chance for attendees to win a pair of ‘Renzo’ frames, much-favoured by Michael Caine.

Also on display will be the original visitor’s book from OG’s previous Soho-based showroom which closed in 1976, signed by its customers including Caine, Peter Sellers, Ursula Andress, Nancy Sinatra and Nina Simone amongst others.

A Spectacle of Fashion in Film starts at 2pm, with tickets £12.

Jean-Luc Godard: 60s Collection

by Modculture 5 February, 2007

A new DVD collection of Jean-Luc Godard movies hits the shelves in March, but Jean-Luc Godard: 60s Collection probably doesn’t contain the titles you’d expect.

By that, I mean it doesn’t include À Bout De Souffle, A Woman Is A Woman, Weekend or Alphaville. Instead, you get Vivre Sa Vie, Masculin Feminin and Two Or Three Things I Know About Her, all digitally remastered from restored prints, as well as an exclusive 60-page booklet – Key Scenes And Dialogue – Jean-Luc Godard.

Vivre Sa Vie explores a Parisian woman’s descent into a life of prostitution. Masculin Feminin centres around the relationship between an ex-army recruit, Paul (Jean-Pierre Léaud), and aspiring pop singer, Madeleine (Chantal Goya), while Two Or Three Things I Know About Her (probably the least well-received of the three movies) focuses on Juliette (Marina Vlady), a bored housewife who chooses to supplement her income by spending one day a week in central Paris engaged in prostitution.

The three-disc set is available on 26th March 2007 through Nouveaux Pictures, priced around £39.99.
