Miss Selfridge swing coat

by Modculture 18 September, 2006

We featured a sixities style coat from Wallis at the beginning of the month, which was practical and stylish, but it was well, black. If black is a bit dull for you, how about this dogtooth swing coat from Miss Selfridge.

In yellow and cream you will certainly stand out from the crowd, and the cheery colour should brighten up those dull winter days.

In 70% wool and 30% polyester, with round collar and button detail, it is a very reasonable £65.

It may not go with everything, but yellow does seem to be one of the key accent colours this season, and this may be just the way to inject a bit of colour into your wardrobe.

You can buy online at Miss Selfridge’s "online boutique" or at your nearest store.

by Modculture 17 September, 2006

Fancy a crash course in the Hammond organ in just 10 minutes? That;s what you’ll get, courtesy of Greg Boraman, with this 10 minute history of the Hammond in popular music, which originally appeared as part of the BBC’s Culture Show.

Greg talks to the likes of Keith Emerson, Stevie Winwood and James Taylor, as well as throwing up some great archive footage to celebrate the Hammond’s 70th birthday. Enjoy!

Retro Target duvet set

by Modculture 17 September, 2006

At first glance, we thought this was a "Mod" target duvet, but on closer inspection, this Retro Target Duvet Set is more of a take on the traditional target, a slightly off centre circular design, looking not unlike a coloured version of the old Vertigo record label.

For your money, you get the duvet cover, which is available in sizes single, double and king size, along with two matching pillow covers. It’s made of a cotton and ployester mix, is machine washable and tumble dryer friendly.

As far as we know, it’s available exclusively from Tesco (and you can buy it online), with prices ranging from £9.97 to £17.97, depending on your size of bed.

Gloverall's camel Pea Coat

by Modculture 17 September, 2006

Remember the Alpha Industries Pea Coat we covered recently? It’s a classic and something of a wardrobe essential when the cold weather kicks in. The one downside is the range colours – black, grey and navy. That’s not the case with this Gloverall Pea Coat.

Yes, this is a pea coat with more of an eye on fashion. It doesn’t compromise on design – this is still the classic look in a wool blend – but you do get it in this rather stylish camel colour. Everything else is the same – double breasted,  single vent at rear, wooden naval buttons two hand warmer pockets one internal and two flapped pockets.

And the price isn’t too different from the Alpha Industries coat either – £169.99.

Sweden’s excellent Moving Sounds release their second album on the copaseDisques label on September 15th, going under the title of Ground Shaker.

The album was recorded at Toe Rag Studios in London. With the Swedish band is well known for their authentic – but by no means dusty – hammond fuelled, fuzzed up 60s sound and Toe Rag known for their original 60s equipment and top notch producers, you can guess what kind of album resulted out of this liaison.

And if you want an idea, check out their MySpace area now for a preview of some tracks. The band is currently on a tour in Germany to promote this spanking brand new album. For details of other shows, check their website.

Shapes And Sounds compilation

by Modculture 14 September, 2006

An interesting album just out on the Top Sounds label is Shapes And Sounds (Orange and red beams from the BBC archives 1967 – 1969), which, as the title suggests, is a collection of late 60s rarities from the BBC’s session archives, compiled by Nigel Lees (author of much of Record Collector’s British Psychedelic Trip series and sometimes New Untouchables DJ).

Shapes And Sounds (out on LP and CD) features 17 performances taped in BBC studios for broadcast on radio shows such as Top Gear and Saturday Club. Six bands are featured – Timebox, Kaleidoscope, Tomorrow, Gentle Influence, The Spectrum and The Montanas.

Highlights include Beggin’ from the Timebox sessions, recently-rediscovered Kaleidoscope tracks including Jenny Artichoke and Music, three tracks from Tomorrow include Blow Up (written for the film but never used in it), The Montanas selections include their sought-after pop/psych 45 A Step In The Right Direction. Gentle Influence rework Curtis Mayfield on You’ve Been Cheatin, while The Spectrum take on the Artwoods favourite I Take What I Want.

The LP has a sixteen page colour booklet based on a vintage Radio Times (the CD has a twenty four page book) packed with illustrations, band histories and listings of all their known BBC sessions, with all copies hand numbered. It’s available now, with samples of the tracks available at the Top Sounds website. Price is £13.49 for vinyl, £12.99 for CD.
